If there’s one thing we’ve learned over these many years of performing bariatric surgery, our patients do best when they get support from a trusted medical source in their postoperative life. Unfortunately, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of online influencers offering conflicting information on how to diet and exercise after bariatric surgery. All too often, our patients come back to us at their follow-up appointments, confused and struggling to hit their weight loss and disease improvement targets. While we have a comprehensive postoperative packet with all the answers, we understand that patients want something more interactive, and as such, we have launched our already popular post-op fitness program, Feel the Burn.
This program offers a place for postoperative patients to get direct feedback from our team about their exercise habits, and it acts as a great gathering point for patients who can then discuss their progress and give each other tips and tricks in a familiar and safe environment. In addition, Dr. Abbas often participates in the Feel the Burn events because, after all, who couldn’t use a little bit of extra exercise and fun, not to mention getting a chance to see our patients and all their progress?
The value in our Feel the Burn sessions is in applying what you learn from us to other parts of your life. Often, patients have access to group classes at the gym, but the instructor may not be aware of their needs and limitations as bariatric patients. Modifying many of the most popular exercises in other group classes is far easier when you know exactly what you should be doing.
Similarly, you can do many of these exercises at home even if you don’t have a gym membership. Get some music that you enjoy, and go for it! Knowing how to perform these exercises at home reduces the possibility of injury due to poor form or missed steps.
We know you’ll love our Feel the Burn program, and we can’t wait to see you at the office. Your first class is always free. Classes are held once a month, and we encourage all our patients to learn more.
